Hpa-an:

Hpa-an, the capital of Kayin state, is located 300km east of Yangon. The city of 50,000 is surrounded by beautiful karst mountains, which rise abruptly from the surrounding plains.

As in much of Myanmar, the health infrastructure is poor and inadequate to meet the needs of a provincial capital. The Trust is currently aiding in the construction of a healthcare training clinic which, when complete, will boost the capacity to deliver basic health services locally.

Mawlamyine:

Mawlamyine (Moulmein), the capital of Mon State, lies on the banks of the Thanlwin river, to the south of Hpa-An. The city of 325,000 people was the first capital of British Burma. Famous colonial writers George Orwell and Rudyard Kipling spent time living in the city.

An important port, Mawlamyine has hardly changed since the days of the British, the jungle slowly reclaiming the majestic colonial buildings.

Basic health infrastructure in Mawlamyine is lacking, overcrowding remains a persistent problem. Currently, there is only one public hospital, supported by a smaller American specialist children's hospital.
