THE ANGUS MCDONALD PHOTOGRAPHY SCHOLARSHIP

THE FIRST PHOTOGRAPHY SCHOLARSHIP OF ITS KIND IN MYANMAR

AMT Scholarship.jpg

The Angus McDonald Photography Scholarship is the first initiative of its kind in Myanmar. Its aim is to foster Burmese talent in the field of photography and photojournalism, and increase the opportunities for Myanmar nationals to receive international-standard photography training through an annual scholarship to the International Photography Programme at Pathshala South Asian Media Institute. One student will be selected annually to receive the scholarship, which will cover all fees and expenses needed to allow them to attend the five-month immersive educational programme at Pathshala’s facility in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

TRAINING MYANMAR’S FUTURE PHOTOGRAPHERS

Crucially, the scholarship will differ from traditional scholarship programmes in other fields by placing equal emphasis on the need to offer international-standard training with the development of domestic educational opportunities. To ensure that the scholarship provides individual development whilst also guaranteeing that those skills and experiences are beneficial to the wider development of photography education in Myanmar, the scholarship will consist of two parts.

It is proposed that the inaugural five-month scholarship in 2017 will be followed, in 2018, by the establishment of a three-month domestic photography programme at Myanmar Deitta. The successful scholarship recipient will return with instructors from Pathshala to assist with the co-ordination and teaching of the programme. From this foundation course subsequent scholarship recipients will be selected annually to travel to Bangladesh, before returning to Yangon to assist with the following year’s programme.

CONTINUITY AND CAPACITY-BUILDING FOR MYANMAR’S PHOTOGRAPHERS

By ensuring that recipients return to Myanmar to pass on the knowledge they have gained and share the experiences they have been through, The Angus McDonald Scholarship will create a cyclical programme with continuity and expansion as core elements of its implementation. It will also create a robust platform for a peer-to-peer network of support for future students.
